Explore Mission Beach

Rainforest meets reef. One of the last unspoiled stretches of tropical coastline in Australia.

Between the Rainforest and the Reef

Mission Beach sits on a 14-kilometre stretch of golden sand between the Coral Sea and the Wet Tropics World Heritage Rainforest. The beach is 100 metres from the park. The reef is 30 minutes by boat. The rainforest starts at the back fence. No other destination in Australia puts all three this close together.

The Beach

Walk out the gate, cross Porter Promenade, and you are on the sand. Mission Beach is a 14km arc of palm-fringed coastline — uncrowded, uninterrupted, and facing directly east for sunrise every morning. Safe swimming, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding right off the shore.

Great Barrier Reef

The reef is closer than most people realise — 30 minutes by boat from the Mission Beach marina. Snorkelling and diving tours run daily with Mission Beach Dive. Dunk Island sits 20 minutes offshore with its own fringing reef and walking trails.

Tropical rainforest at Mission Beach

World Heritage Rainforest

The Wet Tropics World Heritage Area is the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest on earth — 180 million years and counting. It starts at the back fence of the park. Boardwalks, walking tracks, and ancient trees within minutes of your cabin.

cassowary

Cassowaries

Mission Beach is one of the best places in Australia to spot a southern cassowary in the wild. These ancient, endangered birds live in the rainforest that borders the village. Keep your eyes open on the drive in — and around the park itself. Learn more at the Wet Tropics Management Authority.

Fishing & Boating

The Coral Sea is right there. Barramundi in the estuaries, reef fish offshore, and everything in between. Charter a boat with Mission Beach Fishing Charters, hire a tinny from Budget Boat Hire, or launch your own from the Council boat ramp five minutes away.

Mission Beach village life

Village Life

Mission Beach is a real village — not a resort strip. The pub, bakery, supermarket, and fish-and-chip shop are all within walking distance of the park. Markets run regularly. The pace is slow, the locals are friendly, and the sunsets are free.
